Germanium Laser Breakthrough Brings Optical Computing Closer

February 4th, 2010 admin

Researchers at MIT have demonstrated the first laser that uses the element germanium. The laser, which operates at room temperature, could prove to be an important step toward computer chips that move data using light instead of electricity, say the researchers. “This is a very important breakthrough, one I would say that has the highest possible significance in the field,” says Eli Yablonovitch, a professor in the electrical…

Brando Releases Brando-iest Device Ever: Laser Pointer Keyboard
Leave it to Brando to really talk up a product. The “Rii Mini Wireless Keyboard” is apparently pretty awesome if you take their word for it . It has 26 “dazzling” LEDs backlighting the keyboard. As if that wasn’t enough to sell you, it is designed to be easy to carry; by being small apparently. Then there’s the “notebook trackpad”....

To Charge your iPod, Plug in Your Jeans
A breakthrough in wearable computing lets researchers change ordinary cotton and polyester into electronic textiles that can double as rechargeable batteries. That means powering an iPod or cell phone could become as easy as plugging it into your tee shirt or jeans and charging the clothing overnight. “Textile-based power will boost the...

What the iPad Means for the Future of Computing
When I picked up my iPhone over the weekend, I had an epiphany. I was using the LinkedIn app to confirm an invitation to connect, and it hit me: This is the future of mobile computing, the mobile web — the mobile experience . No, I’m not saying the LinkedIn app is the future per se (that’d be silly), but rather the overall concept...

Helinet Brings Live Aerial Video to Cops’ Smartphones
Remember the helicopter footage of the police chasing OJ Simpson in his white Ford Bronco on Los Angeles’ Interstate 405? Now imagine being able to watch that on your smartphone–instead of your TV set–and even tilt, zoom and pan the camera to get different views, similar to what you would do with Google Earth. A new mobile technology...

Freeware Files: 5 Best Optical Drive Apps to Rip, Burn, Mount, and More!
Optical drives aren’t potatoes. You can’t boil them, mash them, or stick ‘em in a stew. And by that, I mean there’s simply not that much you can do with your average digital coffee holder. Optical drives read CDs. Optical drives write CDs. And… well, unless you have your drive hooked up to some kind of crazy Rube...

Most netbooks and other ultra-mobile PCs currently run on Intel’s Atom x86 chips, but according to Analytics firm ABI , they shouldn’t get too used to being on top. In a new report, ABI is claiming that ARM-based chips will overtake Intel by 2013. ARM has been pushing for the opportunity to power non-smartphone devices for some time now. In...
