Optical drives read CDs. Optical drives write CDs. And… well, unless you have your drive hooked up to some kind of crazy Rube Goldberg device that feeds your guinea pig whenever you eject the tray, there’s simply not much else you’re going to be able to do with this essential part of your PC. It only makes sense to follow last week’s ” Best Mouse Ever ” review on Maximum PC with a listing of some of the best freeware and open-source tools for making the most of your handheld input device–or, in layman’s terms, the mouse. If you think that’s an easy task, than I have a golden, $500 mouse with your...
There’s a ton of great freeware and open-source software in the online world today. That statement should be a no-brainer, especially if you’re been reading these application roundups over the past year and a half or thereabouts. However, that’s not to say that every single application that you install on your PC–including...
There is little I enjoy more than coming to Maximum PC each week to dish out a new dose of freeware and open-source software for all to enjoy. But, I confess, it’s been tough times as of late-I feel as if I’ve covered every inch of the ol’ PC ad nauseum and, as such, am running low on witty or interesting themes with which...
Google Voice. Situation: It’s a pretty awesome competitor to good ol’ Skype, especially when you use its crazy powers to forward calls from your magical number to physical locations all over the world. I, for one, use Google voice to get into my own apartment. Ringing me up on the ol’ call box in front of my condo complex...
There are a ton of apps out there that you can use to automate something you do on your PC. I mean, that’s the central conceit of software development as a whole, correct? To somehow ease the time burden it takes one to do a particular task in what would otherwise be a manual, labor-intensive process? Right. Well, when a number of new...
Some of my favorite kinds of freeware apps to find (and install) are the ones that build new functionality into the Windows operating system. I’m running Windows 7 right now, but even this latest version of Microsoft’s OS has substantial room for third-party improvements. It’s not difficult to find free or open-source apps...
Listening to the Maximum PC podcast #131 this past week (I’m behind) brought back some fond memories. Not only was there a little glint in my eye because I was actually mentioned on said podcast, but I was also tearing up a bit at the realization that the very art of podcasting could serve as an excellent Freeware Files roundup. Thus,...
Oh woe are we, for yet another freeware application has grown its wings and left the nest of awesome, available software that we can all install on our desktop and laptop systems ad infinitum . In case you haven’t heard, Google has picked up BumpTop–technically, Bump Technologies–leaving fans of three-dimensional displays but...
I don’t care what you use BitTorrent for. I don’t even want to know. What you download is your own business. That said, don’t even think about coming in the comments with a “omg check out this awesome freeware Pirate Bay scanning app it helped me download all the copies of My Little Pony in like no time whatsoever.”...
Alright, I’ll admit it. I finally got hit with a virus. Well, sort-of. I first thought that the strange “YOUR COMPUTER IS NOT PROTECTED” icon in my taskbar was some indication that my antivirus software of-choice had finally flipped out for good. Double-clicking on the icon brought up an obviously fake replica of Windows Security...
