BitTorrent Census Proves 99% of Files Downloaded are Illegal & DRM Might be to Blame

BitTorrent has plenty of practical and legal uses, but sadly, if you’re one of the millions of people using it, you’re probably breaking the law. A student at Princeton University by the name of Sauhard Sahi has conducted a study of more than 1,000 random files acquired using the trackerless Mainline DHT, and found that more than 99% of them infringe on copyrights. I somehow doubt this news will shock or amaze you, but at least one interesting discovery was made and it makes a pretty compelling argument against those who would try to claim that DRM helps prevent piracy. Hurt Locker Team Sues 5000 BitTorre...We're getting Napster flashbacks!!! The producers behind the Oscar-winning film, The Hurt Locker, started a crusade a few months ago to sue BitTorrent users for illegally downloading their movie online. As of yesterday, an official suit was filed and 5000 BitTorrent users will be handed subpoenas for being in violation of copyright laws. In one of the biggest lawsuits ever against individuals, Voltage Pictures is seeking $1500 from each person to settle. They further warn if people won't settle, they'll go at them for ten times as much when and if the case goes to court. Makes you want to rethink keeping your Netflix membership, huh? Might be worth it to keep it around! As of now, a list of offenders has not been given to Voltage Pictures, only the IP addresses of the accused. But give it some time! Soon, those producers will be storming these people's homes in their own war! That really sucks for the poor film student who can't even afford a package of Ramen Noodles and now has to cough up $1500! Shame! Emule & BitTorrent Sites &...Good News Everyone! Spain is now home to some great file sharing news. "SGAE" (Sociedad General de Autores y Editores) tried in vain to take down file sharing website elrincondejesus.com Before the court case even truly started, SGAE tried to convince the judge that the website needs to be taken down before the site owner was even tried. It seems that in Spain their Music Mafia's don't provide their judges and politicizations with a proper supply of hookers and cocaine because the judge refused to shut down the site with out even trying the site owner. Fast forward to now, and the court case is all over. Not only did the site not get shut down the judge pretty much ruled that all filing sharing sites are legal as long as they are not making money off of it and they are not hosting the files themself (emule and bit torrent sites.) but he also ruled that it is perfectly legal for every day people from Spain to use the site as well.
